A 43-year-old man died after experiencing an apparent medical event after he was arrested by Denver police on Sunday.

The man was arrested on suspicion of violating a restraining order on Sunday morning at an apartment building at 3737 N. Quebec St., according to a Tuesday news release from the Denver Police Department.

Officers used an arm control hold to handcuff him, which the department described as “a minimal amount of force.”

More than an hour after the man was arrested, the officer who was transporting him noticed he was experiencing a medical issue and requested paramedics, according to the department.

While the man was initially standing and conscious, he was “minimally responsive” and lost consciousness and stopped breathing a short time later.

fficers performed CPR and administered naloxone, which treats narcotic overdoses, and the man was transported to Denver Health. He was pronounced dead at 2:12 p.m.

“There is evidence the medical event and subsequent death may be narcotics-related,” Denver police said in a news release.

The incident will be investigated by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Colorado State Patrol and will be overseen by the Office of the Independent Monitor.
