On Oct. 11, 2023, a homeowner in the 3900 block of Cambridge Avenue in Broomfield stabbed and killed Trenton Hansen, 30, who had entered the home through an open garage door, according to the news release.

“Based on the evidence and a thorough investigation, it is clear that the occupants of the home (in the 3900 block of Cambridge Avenue) are immune from criminal prosecution,” the news release states.

After he entered the house, Hansen told the homeowner and his adult daughter he had a gun and had killed before, then he tied the man and woman to a bedpost using duct tape.

Hansen found the homeowner’s 9mm handgun and fired a round at the wall “to show he was serious,” according to the news release, then he found a large butcher knife and stabbed the mattress.

Hansen then began falling asleep from what the homeowner assumed was drug use because Hansen had mentioned he used and sold fentanyl.

The woman freed herself by chewing through the duct tape and cut the bindings off her father using the knife, according to the news release.

The man then took the knife and stabbed Hansen twice on the left side under his armpit and in his rib area, according to the news release.

Hansen jumped up and wrestled with the homeowner before “collapsing on him,” and the woman called 911.

Hansen died at the scene.

Man wanted in fatal Aurora double stabbing arrested in Missouri https://www.denverpost.com/2023/11/28/man-wanted-aurora-stabbing-missouri-arrested/ Tue, 28 Nov 2023 23:12:18 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=5879744 A man suspected in a fatal double stabbing on East Colfax Avenue in October was arrested in Missouri, according to the Aurora Police Department.

Deven Jay Dobbins, 30, was arrested on Oct. 28 in Brookfield, Missouri on suspicion of second-degree murder in the fatal stabbings of 58-year-old Otto Washington and 44-year-old Desmond Thomas.

The stabbing occurred in the 11200 and 11300 blocks of East Colfax Avenue at approximately 8 p.m. on Oct. 16 when people passing by told patrol officers there was a man lying in the street nearby.

Additional passersby told officers about the second victim, who was down the street. The victims, later identified as Washington and Thomas, were transported to the hospital, where they died from their injuries.

Detectives identified Dobbins as a suspect and obtained a nationwide warrant for his arrest, Aurora police said in a news release Tuesday.

The department’s fugitive unit found he was in Brookfield, Missouri and contacted local law enforcement for help with a search. The city of 4,000 people is approximately 110 miles northeast of Kansas City.

Brookfield police, Linn County deputies and Missouri state troopers searched for Dobbins, who was located and arrested on Oct. 28.

Dobbins was extradited to Colorado on Nov. 18 and booked into the Arapahoe County Jail on two counts of second-degree murder.

There are no additional suspects in the case, according to Aurora police.

Dobbins was previously arrested on suspicion of three counts of assault and child abuse in October 2022 and pleaded guilty to third-degree assault in Jefferson County District Court in August.

He was sentenced to 91 days in jail and received 91 days of credit for time served, according to court records.

Dobbins is also suspected of second-degree assault in an Oct. 5 incident, according to court records. A warrant for his arrest in that case was issued on Oct. 19.

Suspect arrested in fatal stabbing at Denver migrant encampment on Thanksgiving Day https://www.denverpost.com/2023/11/24/migrant-camp-knife-attack-denver/ Fri, 24 Nov 2023 17:36:10 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=5876491 Denver police have arrested one man accused of killing another in a Thanksgiving Day knife attack at a downtown Denver migrant camp.

Officers on Friday arrested Gido Izquierdo-Ortega, 64, after he was medically cleared of injuries sustained after police say he attacked the stabbing victim on Thursday near the intersection of Park Avenue West and Lawrence Street in Lower Downtown.

Izquierdo-Ortega was injured when the group of migrants he was harassing with a knife defended themselves by throwing objects at him, according to a news release. While initial reports indicated a second person was stabbed, no such victim has been found, police said.

According to a probable cause statement, police responded to the scene at 10:50 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day on a report of a stabbing.

Officers who arrived on the scene found the victim unresponsive. He was taken to Denver Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 11:26 a.m. The Office of the Medical Examiner has not identified the victim.

Izquierdo-Ortega was also taken to the hospital for “possible injuries to the head,” according to the statement.

Detectives who reviewed a witness’s cellphone video and nearby surveillance footage saw Izquierdo-Ortega “menacing multiple people with the knife” he pulled from a bag. People nearby waved him away and used a stick to maintain distance from him.

The video shows the victim crossing a street and approaching Izquierdo-Ortega from behind and Izquierdo-Ortega turning and stabbing him in the chest, according to the probable cause statement. Several bystanders then threw several items, including a concrete block, at the suspect, knocking him unconscious.

An unidentified witness told detectives that Izquierdo-Ortega was yelling at the group she was in because they were immigrants from Venezuela. She also told police the victim did not do anything to provoke the suspect before he was stabbed and he walked away and collapsed after the suspect attacked him.

Other unnamed witnesses also told detectives that Izquierdo-Ortega and three other men threatened people in the migrant encampment Wednesday night and that when the suspect returned Thursday morning, one person in the camp ran up and kicked him in the butt and another hit him in the face, which is when he pulled out the knife and began chasing people with it, according to the statement. The witnesses said it appeared the victim was trying to defuse the situation before he was stabbed.

The crime scene isn’t near any of the city’s four migrant shelters.

The police are asking anyone with information to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP(7867) as the investigation continues.

Lafayette officers cleared after shooting attempted murder suspect https://www.denverpost.com/2023/10/22/lafayette-police-shooting-attempted-murder-stabbing/ Sun, 22 Oct 2023 15:41:44 +0000 https://www.denverpost.com/?p=5842276 Update Dec. 11, 2023:

Two Lafayette police officers who shot a man while he was trying to stab his father were justified in using potentially deadly force in the Oct. 22 incident, according to a decision issued by 20th Judicial District Attorney Michael Dougherty on Thursday.

Lafayette Police Department Cpl. Leonard Fazio and Officer Houston Lair responded to a home in the 2400 block of Waneka Lake Trail in the early hours of Oct. 22 to find a man trying to stab his father with two kitchen knives in the driveway, according to the DA’s report.

Home surveillance video obtained during the investigation shows the 22-year-old man arrived at his father’s house at 2:30 a.m. because he wanted to access the gun safe in the garage.

When the man’s father wouldn’t give him access to the safe, he pushed his father down the stairs.

While the man’s father called 911 to report his son was having a psychotic episode, the man retrieved two kitchen knives from a butcher block, told his father he needed to kill himself and began stabbing himself in the leg, according to the report.

The man’s father was injured while trying to stop him from stabbing himself. The father ran outside, and the man ran after him.

Fazio and Lair arrived at the scene and told the man to drop the knives, at which point he looked toward the patrol vehicle and then charged at his father and tried to slash him, according to the decision letter.

Fazio and Lair fired five shots at the man nine seconds after arriving at the scene. After he was shot by the officers, the man started stabbing himself and telling officers to shoot him in the head. The officers shocked him with a stun gun to get him to stop stabbing himself, according to the report.

Both the man and his father were seriously injured in the incident.

Fazio and Lair were justified in using potentially deadly force under Colorado law because they had a reasonable belief the man was an imminent danger to his father and to the officers, according to the decision letter.

Two Lafayette police officers were placed on administrative leave Sunday after shooting a suspect allegedly involved in an attempted murder earlier that morning.

Around 2:45 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to reports of a disturbance involving a father and a son in the 2400 block of Waneka Lake Trail in Lafayette.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found the adult, male son actively stabbing his father with a knife, according to a Sunday news release from the Lafayette Police Department.

Lafayette officers attempted to stop the suspect but, when they were unable to, two officers shot the man, the release stated.

Paramedics transported both the father and son to the hospital. The police officers were not injured in the incident.

The two officers who fired their weapons were placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into their use of force, following protocol, Sunday’s release stated.

The Boulder County Investigation Team will investigate the officers’ use of force. The multi-agency team is designed to investigate incidents where officers use deadly, or potentially deadly, force against a person while on-duty.

No names have been released at this time.

Greenwood Early-8 school, the Denver District Attorney’s Office said Thursday.

The boy was arrested shortly after officers responded to the school at 5130 Durham Court at 1:53 p.m. Oct. 5 on a report of a stabbing, Denver police spokesperson Doug Schepman said at the time.

The injured student was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

The 12-year-old was charged as an “aggravated juvenile offender” and “violent juvenile offender” with attempted murder, assault, bias-motivated crime, weapons possession on school grounds and interference with school-impeding staff, Denver DA spokesperson Matthew Jablow said in an email.
